Keeping his pledge to make government more accessible to Missourians, Governor Matt Blunt and leaders from 16 state departments held the fourth 'Capital for a Day' in Carthage on Friday, March 14, 2008. The Missouri Department of Corrections participated in the event.

"We held office hours at the Jasper County Courthouse in Carthage, where we had senior Probation and Parole (P&P) staff and one of our recruiters," Corrections Director Larry Crawford told the Horizon. "It was a good opportunity for Jasper County residents to ask questions and obtain information. Some residents came by to discuss Department operations, some to ask about employment opportunities and others about clemency."

Department Human Resources Recruiter Evette Miller set up a display with photos of each of the Department's four divisions. Crawford and Miller held office hours at the display with P&P Regional Administrator Dardi Smith, District 9 Administrator Ed Davis, District 9 Unit Supervisor Sandra Hood, District 9 PPO II Lauren Cory and P&P District 33 Administrator Rick Robinson. Carthage is served by District 9 in Joplin. The district covers Jasper, Dade and Barton counties, and serves about 1,500 offenders.

"Jasper County has a strong Missouri Reentry Process (MRP) Steering Team which serves the Carthage area," said Crawford. "This group works well together in addressing the needs of offenders who return to the community. We know that their efforts enhance public safety."

Blunt held a news conference at the courthouse, where he was joined by Crawford and other Department officials. State Sen. Gary Nodler, R-Joplin, and State Reps. Ron Richard and Steve Hunter, both R-Joplin, and Ed Emery, R-Lamar, also attended.
