Missouri Eastern Correctional Center (MECC) Assistant Warden Brenda Short has been awarded the Lifesaver Award by the American Red Cross for her actions in saving the life of her granddaughter.
Short told the Horizon the incident happened at Pasta House in Farmington, after she and her granddaughter Cally had finished their meal. Cally asked if she could have a mint from a bowl next to the cash register. When she placed it in her mouth, it became lodged in her throat.
"She grabbed me by the arm and as soon as I saw her face, I knew she was choking," Short said. "I then got behind her and started applying abdominal thrusts. After about three times, the mint flew across the room."
For Grandparents Day last year, Cally made Ms. Short a card with her own Lifesaver Award. At Christmas, Cally gave her grandmother a gold star that she had engraved, "2007 Year of the Peppermint."
