The DOC can provide a variety of educational experiences for the college student in a program that requires an Internship/ Practicum. The department has a demonstrated interest and commitment to student education. This includes a willingness to work with students and faculty to develop substantial learning opportunities and to support staff involvement in student supervision.

College/University Expectations of the Missouri Department of Corrections

A college/university requiring an internship placement with the Missouri Department of Corrections can expect the following:

  1. Jointly established and agreed upon expectations between the student and Department of Corrections i.e., training outline, job description, etc.
  2. Supervision of interns with periodic conferences and evaluation of the student's progress toward meeting Department of Corrections established expectations.
  3. Completion of orientation and training regarding the agency's Policies and Procedures and rules and regulations relevant to the internship.
  4. Coordination with the designated University staff person to supervise the intern and preparation by that staff person of the student intern evaluation.
  5. Assistance so that the intern shall complete the agreed number of hours per week as designated by the college/university in meeting the requirements of the internship.
  6. Involvement in the various duties required of the internship position to include direct program participation, client and offender contact where practical (observation as deemed necessary), compilation of appropriate paperwork and documents etc.
  7. Timely reporting by Department of Corrections of intern performance and periodic review and assessment, feedback provided on a regular basis as requested.
  8. Student interns will be advised of unsatisfactory performance and/or inappropriate behavior. Recommendations for termination will be made via the college/university.
  9. Interns will provide an evaluation of their experience with the DOC at the conclusion of the internship, which will be used to determine the future needs of the internship program.

Department of Corrections Expectations of Colleges/Universities:

  1. Opportunity to screen intern applicants to determine appropriate placement and special needs prior to the interview with Department of Corrections staff.
  2. Name and telephone number of the university/college designated staff person responsible for supervising interns.
  3. On-site visit by the school's intern coordinator is encouraged at least once during the semester of the scheduled internship.
  4. Provide required Intern evaluation forms or give guidance on the desired method of determining final grade if that is an expectation of the Department of Corrections.
  5. Provide the work site with a copy of any intern's evaluation of their experience if such was required by the school.
  6. Acceptance of our right to terminate any Intern for cause, i.e. breach of confidentiality, substandard performance, unexcused absences, etc., which will be mutually discussed prior to such a decision being finalized.

Intern Benefits

  1. Issuance of volunteer/intern identification card (M0931 -3090).
  2. Reimbursement for all approved meals, mileage, and other expenses incurred during the performance of official duties in accordance with department policies and procedures.
  3. Coverage and protection provided under Workers Compensation and the State Legal Expense Fund (TORT Defense Fund and Liability Provisions) as applicable.
  4. Appropriate credit is determined through application with the State Merit System for Intern for volunteer experience gained upon completion of a minimum of 120 hours.
  5. Educational loans i.e.; "Perkins" or other qualifying educational loans, may be available. NOTE: Governmental requirements must be met should employment in specified areas cancel loan obligations, (Department of Corrections is not obligated in any manner to meet this mandate but is willing to comply with documentation requirements etc., as deemed necessary.)
  6. Free tuberculosis testing and any necessary treatment in cooperation with the County Hea1th Department in accordance with Departmental Tuberculosis Testing policies and procedures (D2-7.8).
  7. In-house training and orientation will be provided as required.

Intern Responsibilities

  1. Interns will abide by all DOC Policies and Procedures and respective college requirements relevant to internships.
  2. Interns will complete required 6 hours DOC orientation and training provided by the appropriate Division.
  3. All interns providing reports, studies or term papers related to their experience as an Intern with Department of Corrections as a part of their educational requirement shall furnish a copy of the completed project at least one week prior to completion of the Internship. Interns must obtain pre-approval from the Department of Corrections to produce any report that involves the use of department Information on clients or offenders. The completed project will be maintained in the Intern file with a copy forwarded to the Supervisor of Volunteer Services.
  4. Interns will be assigned a weekly schedule of work hours, as agreed upon by the Department and Intern that will enable them to complete their required number of field placement hours within the period of the Internship.
  5. Interns will maintain established work hours unless permission for scheduling changes is granted by the Volunteer/Intern Coordinator.
  6. Interns will provide notification to the Volunteer/Intern Coordinator of any unexpected schedule changes and will immediately contact the Volunteer/Intern Coordinator when delays or unexpected schedule problems occur.
  7. Interns shall be responsible for providing their school advisor with a copy of their scheduled work hours during the internship and apprise them of any changes or problems.
